Johannesburg (AP) — UN officials have accused the arrest of a large number of people displaced by the ongoing Tigray conflict.

The arrests were made in the face of widespread allegations of human rights abuses, extrajudicial killings, and rape by government soldiers and their allies in the area.

In a statement condemning the case, Ethiopia’s UN humanitarian coordinator, Catherine Soji, said, “Serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law must be promptly investigated and perpetrators brought to justice. Hmm, she said at least 200 refugees were arrested in the assault.

UN officials and locals confirmed that the arrest took place on May 24.

The Tigray and Adiwonfit camps, which house about 12,000 refugees due to the Tigray conflict, may have been invaded by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters engaged in guerrilla warfare with government forces. It was attacked by a soldier who suspected it wasn’t there. Said the aid crew.

“International humanitarian law and human rights law strictly prohibit the arbitrary, arbitrary and arbitrary arrest and abuse of any person,” said Soji, who called for the immediate release of the arrested refugees.

Some of the detainees were subsequently released, but most remained in detention, camp workers confirmed to the Associated Press.

The government-appointed Ethiopian Human Rights Commission commented on the camp raid and said it was monitoring detention.

“These shelters are the only safe havens for those forced to leave their settlements due to ongoing conflicts in the area,” the committee said. “The Commission condemns all actions that endanger the safety and security of civilians and urges prompt corrective action.”

Thousands of civilians are said to have died in a six-month conflict in the Tigray region.

After unsuccessful attempts to resolve disputes through diplomacy, the United States began restricting visas for government and military officials in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The Ethiopian government called the action “misplaced” and “remaining” in a response issued Monday.

The crisis began in November after Ethiopia accused Tigray’s leaders of ordering an attack on a local Ethiopian military base. Armies dispatched by Ethiopian leader Abiy Ahmed immediately expelled the TPLF from major cities and towns, but guerrilla warfare continues to be reported throughout the Tigray region. He joined in to support the Ethiopian army and urged them to make an international call for withdrawal.
