The Nigerian government announced on Friday that it would suspend Twitter indefinitely in Africa’s most populous country.

It’s not immediately clear when the outage will take place, as users will continue to have access to Twitter late Friday, and many say they simply use a VPN to maintain access to the platform.

Others laughed mock mock mock that the government announced actions using the platform.

“Are you using Twitter to stop Twitter? Are you angry?” A user responded and tweeted.

Intelligence Minister Lai Mohammed said Friday that government officials took this step because the platform was being used for “activities that could undermine the existence of Nigerian businesses.”

Mohammed criticized Twitter for deleting the post. “Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is very doubtful,” he added, adding that he had ignored “incitement” tweets against the Nigerian government in the past.

Twitter deleted Mr. Buhari’s post as abusive on Wednesday after the president threatened extremists suspected of being separatists in the southeast.

The civil war between 1967 and 1970 killed more than one million people. The civil war broke out when secessionists tried to establish an independent Biafra for the Igbo people. The Fulani Buhari were on the other side of the war with the Igbo.

In recent months, Biafra-supporting separatists have been accused of attacking police and government buildings, and Buhari retaliated and vowed to “treat them in words they understand.”
