Washington (AP) — Trea Turner completed his record third career cycle by hitting the Washington Nationals’ six triples on Wednesday and achieved a feat on his 28th birthday.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, the speedy shortstop has joined Adrián Beltré, Babe Herman, Bob Meusel and John Reilly to become the fifth player in Major League Baseball history.
Turner hit a single with Tampa Bay’s first opener Drew Rasmussen, a double with Ryan Sherriff’s third off, and a 14th home run of the season with Michael Wacha’s fourth off.
After two innings, Turner hit the ball in the right corner and the Nationals Park spectators immediately stood in hopes of playing third.
It was true that Manuel Margot hit cutoffman Mike Brosseau and second baseman threw it to third baseman, but Turner barely beat Yandy Diaz’s tag with a head-first slide.
The triple caused a three-run inning and expanded Washington’s lead to 11-5.
Turner’s feat continued with a two-game set that made history.
On Tuesday night, Kyle Schwarber became the second player in Big League history to hit 12 home runs in 10 games since at least 1901. Albert Belle did that in 1995 as well.
