The U.S. Department of Commerce said in a statement Friday that it helped electronic technology companies and other companies enable a “Beijing oppression, mass detention, and high-tech surveillance campaign” against a minority of Muslims in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

“The Commerce Department is powerful in targeting entities that are enabling human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region or are using US technology to promote China’s volatile military modernization efforts. We continue to work hard to take decisive action, “Commercial Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a statement posted on the department’s website.
