Bulgaria, Sofia (AP) — Bulgaria’s early elections ended without a clear winner, the Central Election Commission said on Monday that 95% of the ballots were counted.

Former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s centre-right GERB party has a very thin majority over its main candidate, the anti-elite popular television entertainer Slavi Trifonov’s anti-elite Slavi Trifonov. ..

The GERB party won 23.91% of the votes and the Trifonov party got 23.66%. The remaining 5% are from abroad, which mainly voted for Trifonov in the last poll. Four more parties cross the 4% threshold and enter the 240-seat chamber.

In the first reaction to the results, Slavi Trifonov said his party would not join the coalition, but would try to form a minority government after being delegated.

The snap election, which took place just three months after the last inconclusive vote, recreated a fragmented parliament that struggled to form a viable coalition government. They also showed a further decline in Borisov’s support for the GERB party after the current interim government made widespread public allegations of corruption during his reign.

Most parties rejected the idea of cooperating with the former ruling party, so all of this leaves Borisov without a real chance to return to the fourth term, regardless of whether his GERB party ended first in the election. ..

NATO and EU member states Bulgaria have been repeatedly criticized for not tackling corruption, the rule of law and the lack of media freedom.

The anti-corruption campaign of Borisov’s opposition was further boosted by sanctions imposed by the US Treasury last month on Bulgarian civil servants and business leaders for corruption.
