Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia closed its mass vaccination center on Tuesday with the worst damage after more than 200 medical staff and volunteers tested positive for the coronavirus.

The closure was the first of the vaccination centers and occurred on Tuesday when the country’s newly confirmed infection broke through five digits and reached a record 11,079.

Science Minister Khairy Jamaluddin emphasized that swift government action contained a cluster of ideal convention centers in Central Selangor.

Kylie, who is in charge of the national vaccination program, said she ordered the inspection of all 453 workers at the center after it was confirmed that two volunteers were infected with the virus. He said it was safe to visit the center for vaccinations from Wednesday.

Kylie said health measures at all other vaccination centers would be strengthened, but did not order other workers to be tested.

Selangor, the country’s wealthiest state bordering Kuala Lumpur, has been hit hard by the pandemic. It accounted for almost half of the new cases on Tuesday. This is partly due to the increased virus screening in the strict blockade.

The government is struggling to contain the pandemic, which has worsened despite the blockade since June 1. The total number of confirmed cases increased by 50% from June 1 to 855,949, and the number of deaths more than doubled to 6,200.

Hospitals in Selangor, in particular, are overwhelming, with some patients being treated on the floor due to lack of beds and some patients reportedly having piles of corpses in their morgues.

Immunization has increased and 11% of the population is fully vaccinated. At least a quarter of the country’s 32 million people are vaccinated at least once.

Bernama’s national press said Monday’s daily vaccination rate exceeded 420,000, said Muhyiddin Yassin.

He expressed confidence that a fast pace of vaccination would help stop the outbreak.
