Skopje, North Macedonia (AP) — The government said on Sunday that four former Islamic State group fighters and their families had been repatriated to North Macedonia.

The government said a group of 23 members, including 5 women and 14 children, had been moved from Syria and Iraq to the Balkans.

Four men were detained until trial. The government said it requested red notice about the arrests of the four after the state police joined the IS and gathered evidence that they fought in Syria and Iraq.

Due to the coronavirus protocol, women and children were transferred to shelters for a two-week compulsory health quarantine and health checkup. The government also said authorities would investigate “the possibility of participating in criminal activity.” If cleared, they begin the process of reintegration into society.

The government said it was the last group of former IS fighters and their families repatriated to North Macedonia.

Police spokesman Toni Angelovski told The Associated Press that 11 other Macedonian citizens, including women, were repatriated between 2018 and 2020.

A criminal court in North Macedonia has sentenced 13 people to six to nine years in prison for fighting IS in Syria and Iraq.
