Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 50-year-old Angel Cardoza of Woodstock, Illinois was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Michael Coppedge to 25 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of Attempted Murder and a consecutive 5 years for the offense of Aggravated Battery.  Under Truth-In-Sentencing guidelines, Cardoza must serve 85 percent of the sentence for Attempted Murder.

On September 24, 2019, a woman was walking on the Ridgefield Trace bike path in Crystal Lake when the defendant approached her and grabbed her.  The defendant then repeatedly struck her in the head with a hammer.  A bicyclist saw the defendant striking the victim and stopped and yelled that she was going to call 911.  The defendant then ran towards the bicyclist and struck her in the arm with the hammer before fleeing the scene.  Both victims were transported to the hospital and treated for their severe injuries.

This case was investigated by the McHenry County Conservation Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Randi Freese and Jim Newman.
