Add a run for president to the list of things that might occupy retiring U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, in coming months.

In an interview with CNN, Kinzinger said not only, as has been previously reported, is he considering running against Gov. J.B. Pritzker or U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats, but for president.

“The key is, how do we restore the honor of the party in the country?” Kinzinger asked on CNN, adding that he “definitely” wouldn’t rule out a White House run in 2024.

Kinzinger, whose spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment, said he’ll “probably” make up his mind about the governor or senator races by January.

Kinzinger’s future has been a topic of considerable speculation since he announced last week that he won’t seek a new term under the map passed by the Illinois General Assembly, which either would force him to run in a predominantly Democratic district or against another sitting Republican congressman.

Most political insiders I’ve spoken with discount a race against Duckworth in a solidly blue state. Some say a contest for governor might be a little more tempting, but note that Kinzinger’s experience is as a legislator, not as a head of government.
