With another semester coming to a close, Illinois State University’s Student Government Association shared how it plans to improve student representation and mental health access.

President of SGA Patrick Walsh explained what they accomplished over the past few months as well as their plans for the upcoming semester.

“Student Government Association has also been advocating for improved renters’ rights for students here on campus. This is a project we plan to continue working on into the next semester,” Walsh said.

Other plans for the upcoming semester include a bigger emphasis on mental health, which Walsh explained is a pervasive issue among college students.

“I will be planning a mental week for students here on campus. I intend to work with the Student Counseling Services throughout this week by distributing their informational items [and] helping to spread their information to the student body,” Walsh said.

“Additionally, the week will consist of other mental health related events to advocate for this important topic here on campus.”

When asked about the events of Kappa Sigma’s vandalism and student Jakai Martin’s assault, Walsh was quick to denounce the actions of those involved and offered insight into how SGA plans to address these events through appointments of inclusive positions.

“One goal we are beginning work on soon is trying to create a new senator spot within Student Government Association that will represent the Multicultural Center,” Walsh said

“By having a direct advocate from the Multicultural Center at both Student Government Association and Academic Senate meetings, we aim to provide more of a voice for this community on our campus,” Walsh continued.

Additionally, SGA plans to improve its community outreach in order to increase its presence on campus as well as giving students a more thorough understanding of what it is doing.

“We plan to a create a talk-show style segment on our Instagram where we will have individuals from SGA as well as individuals from our campus community come in to speak on SGA and university updates,” Walsh said.

“This will allow for the students to have a full understanding of what we are doing as their representatives, as well as major events occurring on our campus,” Walsh continued.
