Dominique, a newscaster on a government-owned broadcast network, was arrested on July 4 and released on Saturday. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis a few months ago.

Cecilia Edward Dominique told VOA’s South Sudan in Focus that her brother had been arrested for refusing to read a report on President Salva Kiir’s decree, which she called an executive branch.

She said Dominique’s condition worsened because he was unable to take the drug while in Juba.

Patrick Oye, chairman of the South Sudanese Federation of Journalists, said the release of journalists could be a learning experience for journalists across the country.
